Early M. Rumely Smoke Stack Top (1890-1907) | Two-Piece Assembly

A Rare Part Reborn, Stronger Than Ever.

If you're restoring an early M. Rumely, you know this part. This specific smoke stack top is a tell-tale identifier for the early engines, but the originals were cast thin and brittle. Most broke and were lost to time, and finding a complete two-piece original is even harder. We didn't just want to replace this part; we wanted to make it right.

Our journey started with a damaged original that had an old blacksmith repair—a testament to how long these have been failing. We 3D scanned the historic two-piece assembly, capturing its authentic outside profile and the precise fit between the upper and lower sections. In the digital world, we carefully repaired the damage and then intentionally added thickness to key internal areas. This strengthening addresses the original design's weak points without altering its iconic external appearance. From that improved digital model, we 3D printed patterns for sand casting both components.

The result is a part that has the exact external shape and fit of the factory original—and assembles correctly—but with the strength to survive where the originals couldn't.

We chose to cast this part in high-strength Ductile Iron. This modern material is far more resistant to cracking from heat cycles and vibration than the original gray iron, ensuring this isn't just a replacement; it's a permanent solution.

One of the most important features we preserved is the integrated mount for a flame arrestor screen. This allows you to operate your engine more safely, preventing dangerous embers from escaping the stack—a detail that is essential for show grounds and public demonstrations.

This part was made by restorers, for restorers. We know what you need because we need it too.

Features & Benefits:

• Authentic Two-Piece Assembly: Faithfully reproduced as a two-piece unit, just like the factory original, for complete historical accuracy.

• Digitally Restored Reproduction: 3D scanned from a damaged original and perfected in CAD to preserve its authentic profile and component fit.

• Strengthened Design: Intentionally thickened in key internal areas for superior strength where the thin, brittle originals commonly failed.

• Upgraded Ductile Iron: Cast in high-strength ductile iron for superior durability and resistance to heat-related cracking.

• Historic Identifier: A faithful recreation of a rare part that is a key identifying feature of early M. Rumely steam engines.

Fitment Note:

This Smoke Stack Top is designed specifically for use on early M. Rumely steam traction engines (approx. 1890-1907) equipped with an 11" Outside Diameter (OD) stack. As with any restoration project, we recommend you measure your existing smoke stack to ensure a perfect fit. Refer to the product drawing in the images.
